In the meantime, here are some basic home decorating ideas for the new home owner:
- Think about how you get dressed. First you put on a shirt, pants, and shoes. Then come the accessories. The same goes for your house. You need a bed to sleep in, a couch to sit on, kitchen appliances that work, and window coverings for privacy. Then you can worry about things like artwork.
- The quickest, least expensive method for new home decorating is painting. Faux finishes add texture, and painting just one accent wall, or only trims and baseboards adds interest.
- Without light, you can't decorate. Pick up one really nice light fixture, and you'll be surprised by the drama it can add to a room. Or invest in new lamp shades, for a cheap, easy change. Check out yard sales or flea markets for some interesting finds.
- Why not replace hardware on cabinetry? Home improvement stores have thousands of styles to choose from, and in places like kitchens and bathrooms, it's a little thing that means a lot in a room.
- Pick up some accent pieces like rugs or pillows in colors you're considering. Live with them awhile before investing in bigger pieces, to make sure that you like them.
Don't get frustrated by your empty shell of a new home. Decorating takes time, and if you carefully consider every purchase, you'll have the home you really want.
