Hardwood floors are beautiful and those who have them know that they don't come without a price. They can be expensive to install and become unattractive over time if neglected. Making sure you protect your investment and maintain the beauty of your home can be easier than you think. You can begin by following these simple tips on caring for your hardwood floors.

Three Tips For Your Hardwood Floors:

  • Regularly Clean Your Floors. Dirt and other debris can scratch hardwood surfaces, so be sure to vacuum regularly - at least once a week or more, depending on the amount of traffic in your home. Also regularly vacuum any area rugs covering wood floors (dirt can work its way through the rug onto the floor). Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to prevent scuff marks or dents that can result from direct contact with metal objects.
  • Keep Your Floor Dry. Immediately wipe up any pools of water on the floor (small drops here and there probably won't cause any damage). Water can damage the floor by seeping into cracks that are poorly finished, causing wood to warp. Keep a small towel on the floor while you're cooking or doing dishes to easily remove any water from the floor.
  • Use Mats and Furniture Pads. Place furniture pads under tables, sofas, or any other piece of furniture to guard against scratching. Also, when moving furniture, be sure to lift it rather than drag it. Mats and area rugs are great for protecting wood floors in high traffic areas.

Also, be sure to speak to a representative from the company who installed your floor or an expert on your specific type of floor for any unique instructions that may apply to the care of your floor. By caring for your wood floors, you're on your way to maintaining a beautiful feature of and worthwhile investment in your home.
