Front Yard Fix-Up
by Jessica Groach
If pulling into your driveway at the end of the day depresses you, you might have a case of the front yard blues. The good news is that spring is the perfect time to spruce up that space.
It's the last thing you see when you leave, the first thing you see when you return, and it's all your neighbors know of you. It's your front yard. First impressions count for houses, too. How can you up that curb appeal?

Know the Landscape
You may not need to hire a landscaper. A few plants can go a long way. Keep these things in mind when you're plant shopping:
- Shoot for color. A variety of shrubs, trees, ground covers, and perennials give your front yard color year-round.
- Read plant labels, which tell you about plant maintenance needs, and size at maturity. Unruly plants requiring a lot of pruning aren't good front yard choices. Ask a nursery professional about plant care.
- Discounted plants are rarely a bargain. Opt for lush, green, healthy plants.
Sowing the Seeds
When you plant shrubs, space them based on their mature size. Avoid planting them too close to the foundations where the soil gets leached and root systems might become blocked. Stay away from eaves and gutters.
When in doubt, keep it simple. Sometimes a nice, simple expanse of lawn creates the peaceful illusion of spaciousness.
Remember, a front yard is like clothing for your house; it's easy to get tired of wearing the same thing, so give it a change every now and then!
