- Start with living room furniture. Everyone sees the living room first, so you can change a lot of impressions about your home by rearranging your living room furniture to create a new focal point. Try introducing your old china cabinet into the living room, for instance. Ditch that plain coffee table. Instead, put an ottoman or a chest in front of your sofa.
- Rethink window treatments. Instead of a curtain rod, try a garden stake. A beautiful scarf can serve as a valance. See old things in new ways.
- Illusions with mirrors. An old mirror can make any space seem bigger.
- Create collections. Have you collected shells from a favorite vacation spot? What about old leather-bound books? Instead of scattering knick-knacks around the room (a home decorating no-no), gather them together on a shelf or in a shadow box. This instant conversation piece creates impact.
- Bedroom with a view. Just because furniture stores have matching sets doesn’t mean your bedroom should. Hang a heavy tapestry behind your bed for a new “headboard.” Rearrange bedroom furniture at interesting angles. Instead of matching nightstands, use an old wicker chest or bookshelf, which creates extra storage, too.
- The right hardware. Your kitchen, bedroom furniture, living room furniture, or bathroom can be quickly updated by changing the cabinet door and drawer handles with supplies from your local home improvement store. Old furniture is new again!
