Home Electronics Home Decorating Tips

There's a stark difference between most stores that sell home furnishings and most stores that sell electronic equipment. Home decorating stores are lit with warm, soft light, and are usually bathed in soothing neutral colors -- wood floors, taupe walls. Electronics stores, on the other hand, are often lit with blue or purple lights. The colors of the walls and shelves are black or grey. Everything seems designed to convince you this store has been transported directly from the future to a strip mall near you.

Most of us are fairly happy in houses that don't feature black lights or laser beams, so how do you bring these two worlds together once you purchase those fancy electronic goods and take them home? Are they destined to transform your home into a dead ringer for NASA Mission Control? Let's hope not! Here are a few home decorating tips to help keep things homey, electronics and all.

Tip #1 -- An Armoire Is a Television's Best Friend

There's nothing quite like being able to close the door on the television when you're done watching it. Armoires can be expensive, but not seeing your scary rounded reflection in the black TV screen is priceless (or is that just me?). Seriously, though, a beautiful piece of furniture beats a beautiful piece of electronic equipment as a focal point for a room any day.

Tip #2 -- Control Cords

When was the last time you thought, "You know what this room needs? A tangle of cords, right over there in that corner. That'd be great." Not on the list of your top home decorating goals for the year? Keeping cords neatly tucked away, whether you hold them back with twist ties, rubber bands, or another clever system of your own invention, will help keep your electronic goods from looking like they're taking over.

Tip #3 -- Everything in Moderation

There's really no reason to have a television in every room in the house. Setting up a home entertainment systems in one room can help you define your space and help prevent every room from feeling like the TV room. Ditto for virtual reality video game chambers. Or am I the only one who wants one of those?
