Home Improvement for Kitchens: Stainless Steel Appliances

When renovating, the kitchen can be hard to integrate with the rest of your home's style. Stainless steel is a perfect compromise; it goes well with the most traditional home and the most modern.

A Hybrid Home Improvement
My off-white kitchen appliances bugged me as soon as I moved into my arts-and-crafts bungalow seven years ago. When trying to figure out what to do, I had to consider cost and how any new appliances would go with the rest of the house. It would be impossible (on my budget) to have a 1920s kitchen renovation. But I didn't want to go totally modern. A stainless steel/black combination, to me, felt like the ultimate home improvement hybrid of Flintstones and Jetsons.
Stainless Steel Choices
I chose the black/steel combo because I loved the way it looked--and it was cheaper than all stainless steel. Refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and range hoods are all available in stainless steel. There are also smaller appliances available (with smaller price tags), such as microwaves and popcorn poppers.
Some manufacturers will offer package deals if you buy more than one appliance at a time. For me, the one-at-a-time renovation worked best.
Finding the Right Appliances
Sure, looks are important in anything we see every day (a refrigerator, a spouse...), but its capabilities are important too. If you've fallen in love with a particular oven because, for instance, it looks great in stainless steel and black, and is under $500, don't forget to check out what it can do (or not do). Don't make the mistake I made in buying an oven, for instance, without an automatic cleaning function, unless you enjoy those oven-cleaner fumes.
