Home security systems needn’t cost the earth or disrupt your home. A few simple measures is all it takes to make your home secure against an intruder.
Beat the Statistics
If you’re planning some home improvements, you really ought to be including home security measures in your plans.
Not convinced? Here are two key facts that might change your mind:
- In the US, a burglar breaks into a house, apartment or condominium every 11 seconds.
- Nine out of ten burglaries are preventable.
In other words, it could happen to you. But, with the right home security system in place, you can beat the statistics.
Basic home security
Good home security is dependent on the three things that burglars hate the most: being seen, being heard, and being slowed down.
To assess the vulnerability of your home, think about that the other way around. If there’s a part of your property where an intruder can get in and out quickly, without being seen or heard, your home is not secure. Burglars are usually opportunists, so the trick is not to present them with an opportunity.
Beating the burglar
Alarms, lights and locks are the obvious home security solutions. Focus your efforts and spending on the most vulnerable parts of your home; for example, you should inspect the doors and windows that aren’t visible to neighbors or passers by.
But home security isn’t all about buying the right systems. An important element of effective home security is your attitude. Nobody wants to live in fear, but it’s important to be security aware.
Keep trees and bushes cut back so that they don’t offer cover. Put your valuables out of sight. Don’t leave tools where they could be used by a burglar. And remember that you have to use the locks, alarms and lights installed in your property. The majority of burglaries are the result of the intruder simply walking in through the door!
