How to Get Rid of a Flea Infestation

Fleas are parasitic insects that feed directly on warm-blooded animals - like you and your pets! Their bites leave slightly raised and red itchy spots that can be very irritating. Find out how to get rid of a flea infestation by following the advice below.

The number one way that fleas are brought into the home is on the body of a warm-blooded creature such as your cat or dog; the first thing to do, therefore, is treat your pet.

How to Get Rid of Fleas On Your Pets

  • Watch for signs of flea infestation on your pet, e.g. excess scratching or biting.
  • Go through your pet's fur with a fine-toothed comb and drop any fleas that you find into soapy water to drown them.
  • Your pet's bedding may be at the heart of your flea infestation so wash it weekly in hot soapy water.
  • Bathe your pet every week if possible.
  • Ask your veterinarian for advice on treatments for flea infestation in your pets, which may include: shampoos, pills, ointments, or powders.

How to Get Rid of a Flea Infestation in Your Home

Once you have dealt with your pet's problems, you need to think about how to get rid of the fleas that are undoubtedly now plaguing your home.
  • Vacuum thoroughly and often to pick up fleas and their eggs.
  • Make sure the areas where your pets spend most of their time are cleaned regularly.
  • Spray carpets with an appropriate insecticide.
  • Call a pest control company if your own efforts are unsuccessful.
If you follow these tips on how to get rid of the flea infestation that is plaguing your home you will eventually beat the problem, although it may take several weeks of determined effort before you see a result.
