"Pondering a Backyard Pond?"

by Jessica Groach
Home Improvement Ideas Columnist

There's nothing as enjoyable as your own backyard pond, with the sounds of a gentle waterfall and the colors of water plants. Not to mention the increase a garden pond brings to your home's value.

A backyard pond is a source of relaxation, but it does require an initial investment of time and effort. If you're ready to take the plunge, here are a few questions that you should ask:

What’s in a Pond?

What do you hope to get out of your backyard pond? Do you want a water garden pond, mostly for plants and perhaps a few small fish? Do you want a larger pond for koi? This should be your first consideration.

How Big Should the Pond be?

Surprisingly, larger ponds are less costly and require less work than small ponds. Most pond owners complain that their pond is too small. If you think you could go bigger, do it. In a garden, bigger ponds are safer for fish and plants. A simple water lily can take up a 3' x 3' space, and many tropical plants are even bigger. Koi need up to six feet of depth. One thing to remember is that your backyard pond can be any shape you desire.

But How Much Will it Cost?

A small water garden starts at around $100, and full-size water garden ponds with filters and waterfalls, even with fish, can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000. However, the investment usually pays off quickly in added property value, and in the enjoyment you receive from it. Certain types of koi have been known to cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Once built, a garden pond should cost very little to maintain, and on average will only require about 10 minutes/week of your time.

If you have the money, the space, and the desire to put in a little work, a backyard pond is an excellent way to relax, rejuvenate the senses, and refresh the mind.
