Radiant Heat Is a Hot Bathroom Remodeling Idea

by Wendy Croix
Home Improvement Ideas Columnist

Baby, it's cold outside, but it would be oh, so warm in your bathroom, if you had radiant heat. Whereas large radiant heat projects get very pricey, very fast, a smaller bathroom remodeling project can be affordable. Though radiant heat comes in two forms--hydronic and electric--the experts say there's a 70% chance that electric radiant heat is the choice for bathroom renovation needs. So, no boiler needed.

Guide To Redmodeling GuideTo: We'll search our entire network of established home improvement companies and instantly connect you with one in your area that offers the services and value you need. It's fast, free, and there's no obligation. Search now.

Most online websites offering bathroom remodeling services and ideas include cost calculators to help you estimate the expense of installing radiant heat. In fact, the remodeling cost for an average size bathroom runs $500-700, including the electric mat, thinset cement installation, and the timer-thermostat that controls the heater, letting you awake to toasty bathroom tile. Even better, it will only cost you a dime a day for radiant heat--and much less in some areas.

The Beauty of Radiant Heat

Like all heating systems, radiant heat has its caveats. However, few of them apply in a bathroom redesign. Here are some issues with radiant heat:
  • Wood floors: if your high end décor calls for wood floors in the bathroom, you need to know that a floating system should be used to lessen the chances of small cracks appearing in the wood. However, such cracks can happen with any bathroom heating system, and less expensive engineered woods are a flooring of choice in radiant heat construction.
  • Rugs: unless they're small, bathroom rugs undercut the efficiency of radiant heat. Bathroom carpet is out, too. However, you won't want rugs or carpet between you and your radiantly heated bathroom tile, now that those icy winter floors are a thing of the past.
Go ahead. Take a shower. Then towel off in the warmth of your bathroom renovation. No bathroom space heater needed for those extra cold days. No drafts, no vents, no roaring fan. Just luscious, radiant heat.
