When doing a kitchen cabinet refinishing job it seems like the decisions never end. However, it is in making quality decisions that you will have a quality kitchen cabinet refacing job.
Decisions, Decisions
When it comes to replacing your countertops you have a choice to make. Do you remove the old surface before applying the new countertop or do you put it on overtop? Well, there are some things that you should know.
When you are doing your kitchen cabinet refacing, you will have done a lot of investigating the existing cabinetry. What is the flat surface of the counter top made of? Is it particle board or plywood? When removing countertop from plywood, large chunks tend to come up with the old countertop.
Particle Board and Flat Tops: Kitchen Cabinet Considerations
With particle board, pieces come up in small chunks. These small chunks are simple enough to fill as part of your kitchen cabinet refinishing project. The second thing to look at is at the condition that the existing countertop is in and how it is holding to the flat top. If the countertop is in good shape and is holding very firmly to the flat top, you will save yourself a lot of time and trouble on your kitchen cabinet refacing project by placing the new countertop over top of the existing countertop.
If the countertop is still securely affixed and the surface itself is free from large chips or warping, sanding and stripping it then placing the new top right over it can work just fine. However, if the countertop and or flat top below is damaged you may be best advised to remove both and start fresh. Only a very critical analysis can give you the information you need to make a qualified decision.
