Tired of reducing natural light and hiding beautiful views in order to reduce your home energy bill by using curtains, shades, and other materials to reduce the energy loss through your old inefficient windows? Then you might be interested to know that the Federal Government wants you to get new home windows.
In fact, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 gives consumers a tax credit of up to $200 towards the purchase of qualified, energy efficient replacement windows as well as doors and skylights.
How to Obtain the Tax Credit on Replacement Windows
According to the National Fenestration Rating Council, there are five steps you must follow in order to quality for the tax credit on your new home windows.
- Look for replacement windows that carry the EPA’s Energy Star designation choosing new home windows that are most appropriate for your particular climate zone (Northern –a mostly heating zone, North/Central and South/Central- two heating and cooling zones, and finally Southern – a mostly cooling zone).
- Use the NFRC label to compare replacement windows to see how a particular window compares to other new home windows in terms of over all energy efficiency and performance.
- Purchase and install your replacement windows.
- Complete the appropriate tax paperwork and submit it with your Federal taxes. While you do not need to include the Energy Star label with your return, you will want to keep the information with your tax records for future reference.
- Keep any receipts related to the purchase of your replacement windows as well as a copy any manufacturer’s certification for your records as well.
- Enjoy the great views and lower energy bills that will result from having new home windows.
If you’re looking to replace your home windows with more efficient new home windows why not take advantage of the Energy Policy Act and get a little extra savings along with a lower energy bill.
