Saying "I Do" Out Back

Are you dreaming of a lovely garden or backyard wedding? Consider the following, before your dream becomes a nightmare.
- Breathing room. You may not fit everyone into your backyard as comfortably as you might think. Look at that guest list. Can all those people fit comfortably inside (if it rains), or comfortably outside (if it's nice out)?
- Take a seat. Where will everyone sit? You'll need to rent chairs and tables, as well as linens, plates, silverware, and glasses.
- Too many chefs. You don't want to cook in your wedding gown. Hire a caterer, and make sure the caterer will have the proper equipment and electricity supply at your home.
- The Great Outdoors. Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. Besides rain, a blazing sun can scorch a backyard wedding. Consider renting a tent for shade, and heaters or misters if necessary.
- Standing room only. Advise wedding guests to wear comfortable shoes. Spiked heels may sink in grass or garden mud. You can also rent a backyard carpet.
- Being neighborly. Warn neighbors that 1) there will be music, 2) there will be lots of guests parking nearby, and 3) you'd appreciate them not running lawn mowers or leaf blowers when you're saying "I Do." You might try borrowing a parking lot from a nearby church or school.
- Flora and fauna. Provide bug spray - bees love gardens and backyard weddings, too. Keep food out of the sun and away from insects. And keep your pets at a kennel or with a neighbor for the day.
Backyard weddings can great - try a clam-bake theme, or even a carnival with games and prizes. Just make sure that your backyard or garden wedding creates as little stress as possible for your special day.
