According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 300 children under 5 years old drown in swimming pools nationwide each year. Make sure your swimming pool is safe for children by following these tips provided by the CPSC.

Install Barriers Around Your Swimming Pool

An important part of swimming pool safety involves installing barriers that prevent young children access to swimming pools. Barriers may include a fence, wall, door alarm, or power safety cover.

The CPSC recommends that fences or walls be at least four feet high and that vertical fence slats should be less than four inches apart. Openings in chain-length fences should be no larger than 1-3/4 inches. Following these specifications ensures that children are unable to penetrate the barrier.

Any doors leading directly from the house to the pool should be equipped with alarms that sound when a door is unexpectedly opened. As an alternative to door alarms, you can install a power safety cover, a motor-powered barrier that is placed over the pool.

In addition to installing some sort of barrier, the CPSC recommends that people with swimming pools adopt the following safety tips.

  • Never leave a child unsupervised near a pool.
  • In the event a child is missing, check the pool first.
  • Do not allow a young child in a pool without an adult.
  • Supervise all young children, even those who know how to swim.
  • Learn CPR
  • Keep rescue equipment by the pool and be sure a telephone is near the swimming pool along with emergency phone numbers.
  • Keep toys away from the pool when it's not in use; toys can attract young children to a pool.
  • Never prop open the gate to a pool barrier.
These swimming pool safety tips do not represent a comprehensive approach to pool safety. Additional information about swimming pool safety - such as safe diving and sliding practices - can be obtained through sources such as the CPSC, the National Spa and Pool Institute, as well as the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals.
