At the end of a long, stressful day, you slip off your shoes and kick back in your neat, relaxing, beautiful bedroom with a glass of chilled chardonnay and a good book.
Does this sound like your bedroom? Between the paperwork on your desk, the laundry on the floor, and the electrical cords on your dresser, your bedroom might be anything but relaxing.
A Colorful Change
Color can dramatically affect the feeling of a room. Greens, blues, and purples are soothing. Reds, oranges, and yellows inspire creativity and alertness. Softer, muted hues promote sleep, while bright, vibrant ones energize.
What Works, and What Doesn't
Here are some tips for eliminating clutter and creating a soothing space.
- Move computers and paperwork out of your bedroom. You can't relax with work staring you in the face.
- Keep your bedroom cool and dark for the best night's sleep.
- Rearrange your bedroom furniture for ease of movement. Furniture that blocks doorways, windows, or your path to the bathroom at night is frustrating.
- Hide electronics inside bedroom furniture, or remove them. A TV invites the world into your bedroom, and it doesn't promote sleep. Plus, cords create clutter.
- Consider making a decorative fireplace, or buying an electric fireplace. Even a mantel with lots of candles creates a relaxing, romantic atmosphere.
- Carve out a reading corner. It's cozy, and keeps books from piling up next to your bed.
The rest of the house should take on the burdens of the day. Your bedroom should help you forget about them.
