Window Shopping

The Importance of Window Shopping

by Jessica Groach

We ask a lot from windows. They're the only design element we can see from the inside and out. They withstand weather extremes, from cold to hot, wet to dry, calm breeze to harsh winds, while keeping us comfortable.

You probably never thought too much about your windows until you started noticing a draft. So here are some things to consider.

Guide To Redmodeling GuideTo: We'll search our entire network of established home improvement companies and instantly connect you with one in your area that offers the services and value you need. It's fast, free, and there's no obligation. Search now.

First Steps

If a room feels drafty or the window leaks, you may not need all new windows.
  • Check weather stripping, hardware or sealants, and replace those first.
  • Interior storm windows fit into, or over, primary window openings. They're easy to install and remove, and they add energy efficiency.
  • If you need all new windows, start by getting precise, professional measurements.

Replacement Windows

Replacement windows are different from new construction windows. Replacement windows are installed in existing window frames, requiring little construction. They also create a smaller glass opening. Note that some shops will only sell replacement windows.

New construction windows come with their own frame, meaning you'll have to tear out the old frame to make room. They require more effort and expense, but they offer more room for design, light and window function.

Materials

Consider construction as well as look. "Assembled" windows have frames that are measured and cut, with pieces snapped together. This means more joints, resulting in less strength, more air infiltration, and a bulkier appearance.

Consider glass carefully. Multiple-glazed glass is usually insulated for improved protection. Gases like argon or krypton offer even greater insulation. Low-E coatings help reflect heat in the summer, and keep heat in during winter. Evaluate your home's needs first, because these options may be costly and unnecessary.

As with anything, the cost of windows is proportional to their quality. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
