Building a patio is the first step. But even after the cement's been poured or the deck's been built, you're still a couple of steps from backyard paradise. Turns out, it's the patio accessories that make all the difference. Here are a few of the patio essentials no outdoor retreat should be without.
Nothing says relaxation like a great backyard patio. With these patio accessories, you can turn your patio into the perfect retreat.
Have a Seat: Patio Furniture
Sure, you know that you're going to need someplace to sit, but choosing the right patio furniture involves more than choosing something with some legs and some cushions. Look for durability. If you choose wood patio furniture, make sure the wood is weather treated. For cushions, durable fabrics that are water-resistant and fade-resistant are musts. Consider seating carefully. For most arrangements, you'll want your patio furniture to include a table, but you have more options when it comes to chairs versus benches, stools versus settees. While you may want to maximize seating, keep in mind that an open feel is always better than a crowded one.
Made in the Shade: Patio Umbrellas
If you're blessed with major shade trees, you may be able to bypass the patio umbrella, but otherwise, it's an item not to be skipped. You may be dreaming of sun all winter long, but come summer, nothing's going to feel better than shade. A patio umbrella will make your patio enjoyable during the day, not just in the evenings. It's well worth it to pay for a sturdy patio umbrella with a solid anchor rather than settling for the kind that tips your patio table over in the slightest breeze.
Warm Things Up: Patio Heaters
Even for lucky folks in Mediterranean climates, when the sun sets it can get a little nippy now and again. Investing in a patio heater will warm things up just a touch on those cooler evenings. If you live in a climate with four real seasons, a patio heater can extend your outdoor season considerably. Several patio heaters, spaced along the edges of your patio can give a good effect, as can more elaborate heaters built into your deck (think floor heaters or overhead lamps). Whatever you do, make sure the heaters you choose are safe for outdoor use.
With the right accessories, your patio can be the perfect place to relax. Choose wisely, and you'll be amazed just how lovely it can be.
